Disruptive Storytelling with Military Changemakers is a biweekly podcast presented by Partners in PROMISE. Partners and PROMISE is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the rights of military children in special education. Large organizations, like the military, have learned to love the status quo. But at Partners in PROMISE we believe in being disruptive, as we have learned having easy conversations rarely leads to real change, in special education or the military. We are a community of military changemakers who aren’t afraid to get disruptive.

Military General with Bipolar Was ”Fit for Duty”
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
Guest: Retired U.S. Army Maj. General Gregg Martin
A retired Army general shares his story of what it was like to experience bouts of mania and depression while on active duty — symptoms that would eventually lead to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He shares details about how the mental health condition affected his career and what he’s doing now to ensure others don’t encounter the same barriers to getting help or feeling the stigma as he did.
“Bipolar — I never wanted it, but it wanted me. And it’s never going to leave. It’s always a part of me, and it’s my job to be vigilant and keep it at bay because if you let your guard down, it can come roaring back and take you down again.”

“I think that we really have to be mindful of where our military children are now and really be talking about — not just with our civilian friends and providers and community — but also our military and DoD around how we’re talking and thinking about mental health as it relates to the kids now because they really are our future.”

We are all of us in this together."
